Our Drummers Welcome the Amistad to Hartford

On September 27, our drummers were invited to visit the replica of the Amistad ship, docked at Hartford's Riverfront, to learn about the resiliency and determination of the Mende captives during the 1839 Amistad Uprising.

Our students performed traditional African and West Indian songs of welcome and toured the ship to learn about the significance of the crew's fight for freedom, and its relevance to social and racial justice today, and in particular to the City of Hartford and Connecticut's Old State House.

Led by our amazing percussion instructors Mr. Jeff and Mr. Kamau, with help from our Strings instructor and musician extraordinaire Mrs. Struzynski, the students played, learned and toured the vessel while representing Arts Middle extremely well.
